New wines July 2011
I'm very excited at the new wines that will be coming to these pages in the very near future!
At the end of a half year of exhaustive tasting (I know, it's a tough job) I am happy to announce some new wines which are seriously good value for money! They are all from Italy and Spain and Australia.
In the current economic climate (and how tired we are of reading those words) it has been my aim to find some wines that I can recommend to you that are not going to break the bank and I am happy to say that I have succeeded. Whether you agree will, of course, be up to you!
The prices for the new wines begin at £5.50 for the Ca'di Ponti Catarratto (white) and Nero d'Avola (red) from Sicily. The Catarratto is very clean, fresh, has crisp acidity with attractive lemony characters and is very good both as an aperitif and with some light food. The Nero d'Avola is well balanced with surprisingly (given the price) soft, ripe, yet firm tannins and a black cherry finish.
Also from Italy are the Conviviale wines, priced at £6.25. The red is the Montepulcianoi d’Abruzzo and the white is the Pinot Grigio from Venezie. The red has impressive intensity, with cherry/ripe plum fruit aromas and warm, earthy spice. The palate is densely packed with morello cherry, cassis and bramble fruit flavours. The Pinot Grigio is a crisp and lively dry white, lightly aromatic with characters of peach, baked apple and citrus fruits on the nose. Medium bodied with fresh lemony fruit and underlying hints of nuts, straw and a gently honeyed finish.
The Borsao Garnacha is also new this summer, another great value wine at just £5.50 – blackberries and redcurrants dominate the palate. Soft tannins, good acidity and a hint of spiciness - this will go with pretty much anything. Brilliant with tapas and with heartier meals, great versatility!
There will be another update shortly with other new additions to the listings here...
